Convenience center water faucet not working.
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:11:45 PM »
I have a faucet in our water convenience center that has a quick connect hose fitting. With city water connected and on, I have no flow from it. There is a pink tag that describes the possibility of a sticking valve and how to free it. Tapping (firmly) the center brass valve several times is supposed to free it. The brass valve is spring loaded and is depressing about 1/4" or so.

I have pressed the brass fitting in with water applied, with water shut off and system depressurized, and even tried water hammer to see if I could unstick it, or get flow to it.

Not luck. Before I go in for service or tear in apart, anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Eric

Are you tapping or pressing in the center to free the stuck check valve or just the outer sleeve? the center needs to be pushed in with a punch, and you should get water out. make sure your winterization valve is off and your water heater bypass is off and your fill is on normal flow. sometimes if there is to much back pressure you can not connect the coiled hose and you wont get any water. pressing on the center check valve will relieve pressure and allow you to hook up the sprayer.

I can connect easily. Winterize is off. Whole system is flushed. The center is what I have been tapping/pushing on. Seems freely moving. Not sure what's up.

Very strange. Definitely going to have to disassemble. Bring tools to Charlie Brown

Yep. Went To MOC same problem happened to another guy. Valves for the faucet were closed over the winter. He thinks antifreeze dried became sticky and sealed the gaskets in place.

He disassembled his wall in the storage area to get to the back of the unit and found the valve stuck in its seat. Popped it loose with a screwdriver.

It's a bit of an undertaking on mine I think.

The back panel to the storage area should be in 3 pieces. The panel to remove to get to the back of the convenience center has 6 screws if it is like mine. Not bad at all and you should find your water pump back there.

Just thinking, but if you have everything connected, what if you blew air backwards into the system through that valve?

I actually thought of that sort of thing. I used water opened the fill valve, opened the fresh water drain and low point drains and used back pressure with water. No joy. Air might be different. However I don't have the pump and fittings for that. But good thought!

Eric;

Don't know if you have the "stink bug" problem yet in New Hampshire, but if you do, those suckers are notorious for setting up their little mud/dirt habitats/nests in places just like a plumbing especially quick connect fittings. Their nest look like densely packed mud and it will stop the flow of water even under pressure. I sell thousands of gallons of both ethylene and propylene glycol each year and never heard of it drying up and becoming "sticky". I wish you were closer, I could probably have that thing flowing for you in a short while, I have all the equipment to make it happen. Have you tried just removing the quick connect fitting and cleaning it in a solution of CLR?

The quick connect is clean, Eric. No visible issue with it. We'll get into it this weekend, for sure!

I agree 100%. I only use the pink stuff to pour a little in each drain. I used the stuff in my first TT and every year when I opened it in the spring I had to take something apart to free it from the pink stuff. I've been using air since 2008 and have not had the first issue. We have had some -20 degree temps here the past couple years with no problems.

Following up on this. There was a broken back-flow preventer wedged in the quick connect. Damaged beyond repair, I removed the internals and reinstalled the quick-connect. The outside faucet works as advertised. Will order a new connector when i get around to it. Or maybe not! I am not sure of any real benefit of having that added "feature" anyway.

So it works and works great.
