We adopted two Danes a couple weeks ago. Dudley (or Duds, formerly Xanadu) came to us in October. He was being protective and the surrendering owners didn't want him around their 7 kids anymore. He was severely underweight. We could see every rib, hip bones, and spine. He has some anxiety issues so he's been quite the project.

Miles came to us on Valentine's Day. He was returned because he isn't good with kids and his adopters just had a baby. They actually worked with him quite a bit with trainers and behaviorists but when they tried to introduce him to the baby he lunged at them. He is really well behaved. He and Duds became instant best buddies. Duds started behaving better. We can even leave him loose when we leave without being attacked when we get home! He seems much calmer. Miles always wants to be wherever Duds is. We decided that they were meant to be together so we adopted them both. We're hoping we can bring them camping. First trial run is May 8. It's 15 minutes away so we can bail if we have to.

Duds (he thinks pretty highly of himself)

Miles (loves his sticks)

We have a new event at our house called The Stick Games. Miles taught everyone how to play. Smudge is the ref. There is usually drool involved.

Good for you!!   I love rescues and have had several "project" dogs that required significant love and rehabilitation.   It is such a wonderful feeling to save a dog and have him/her become your best friend.

I have seen many people camping with dogs that size, so it is not so much the size but the demeanor.   If they are able to just hang out, bark only a little, be OK spending some time alone, then I think you will be fine.

Congratulations and I hope to get to meet Duds and Miles someday.

We've been camping with two Danes for several years but just lost them last fall. They were always the quietest dogs in the campground. I'm a little worried that Duds will bark.
